Premium Rope Supplies

Jade Rope was formed to offer shibari, kinbaku and hojojutsu enthusiasts access to a wide range of rope. Our online store offers an extremely diverse range of ropes, including hemp, jute, cotton and other natural fibre ropes as well as many man-made or synthetic ropes.

We formed Jade Rope so that anyone with an interest in rope based bondage or restraint can access exactly the type of rope they wish at great prices.

Why the name, Jade Rope?

We prescribe to the view that shibari and kinbaku both derive from hojojutsu (also known as nawajutsu) the Japanese martial art of restraining people using cord or rope. Because it is these art forms - whether artistic or martial based - that have influenced rope bondage globally we settled on jade because of the stone's broad association with Asia as a small homage.

That sounds like you believe shibari and kinbaku are different, aren't they the same?

Both shibari and kinbaku are terms that can not really be interchanged, but the terms are very closely related. It would be hard to argue that they are different activities, however - and this is purely our view point - we believe Shibari practitioners focus more on the aesthetic look and art form of their ties, whilst the Kinbaku mindset is more cantered on restraint as functionality.

Shibari and Kinbaku both share strong fetish elements and an even stronger fetish following. Still, even here we see a small divide by noticing a greater association, of shibari with artistic photography.  While in comparison, rope bondage being used for restraint purely as an SM or Ds modality, and/or for sexual activity is associated more with the term Kinbaku.

It is our belief that even if shibari and kinbaku are viewed as similar but different activities by today's practitioners, the difference in goals/motives behind the inclination to tie will eventually develop to the point where there is a clear distinction. Otherwise one could argue that all three activities should be correctly categorised as Hojojutsu with no distinction between martial arts, artistic endeavors, or fetish driven pursuits.

Why sell so many variations of rope?

Without question we wished to offer hemp and jute, the traditional ropes that were used during the Edo period (1600-1868 approximately) in Japan. Learn more about this period's importance and how it relates to rope bondage today by reading our history and traditions page.

Our full range of rope products built out from there into two categories:

Natural Fiber Rope

Hemp - When finished correctly, hemp ropes are capable of being soft with exceptional strength.
See our natural hemp rope for sale.

Jute
- Sharing many characteristics with hemp, jute is made from a different plant and is slightly more flexible and typically lighter than hemp. Jute is often credited as the original rope of preference for the samari and the 'police' who developed hojojutsu.
See our natural jute rope for sale.

Cotton
- As another natural fiber with 'linen like' characteristics, cotton was used as an alternative by bondage enthusiasts in the west for much of this century.
See our 100% cotton rope for sale.

Synthetic Rope (Man Made Fibers)

Nylon - With a pleasurable soft feel nylon is an inexpensive option to start your exploration in shibari, kinbaku or hojojutsu.
See our 100% nylon rope for sale.

Polypropylene - When 'woven' using multifiliment, this 'relatively new' synthetic option allows manufacturers to create a soft and flexible rope.
See our MFP rope for sale.

Polyester - There are different grades of this product so be careful if shopping in a hardware store, the right blend can offer a less plastic feel to nylon.
